Last month, the Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited Australia’s 5,000th solar installer. Solar has been booming In Australia. With a record 1.2GW of solar installed in 2017, the industry has come a long way since the 300 accredited installers in 2007. Soaring electricity rates coupled with falling technology prices have primarily driven this growth – making short payback periods and substantial savings a no-brainer for homeowners and CEO’s alike.
Further technological innovation will likely continue to fuel the solar boom and open up new markets. Battery storage technology is what everyone seems to be looking to. As storage technology becomes more affordable with bigger economies of scale and improved efficiency, the solar-plus-storage wave is likely to sweep Australia.
With so few battery systems taking off in Australia, progress is nonetheless being made and Todae Solar is on the forefront of this innovation. Later this year, Todae Solar will commission an 88kW solar system with battery storage on behalf of Wyndham City Council’s overall 638kW multi-site rollout and are expecting more storage systems to follow.
Other areas of innovation that are likely to further drive commercial solar uptake in Australia is better efficiency in modules and technology like tracker systems, which help capture more sunlight by tilting the panels during the day following the parabola of the sun in order to capture maximum light. This technology is commonplace in the United States and on large utility scale projects, however, Todae Solar will be installing one of Australia’s largest behind-the-meter tracker systems later this year.
With these technical innovations – and whilst electricity prices remain high despite retailers slightly decreasing prices after years of steep rises – demand for cheaper electricity through solar power is growing and likely to continue. However, given falling value of LGC’s, and the struggle for solar manufacturers to meet market demand, there has never been a better time to go solar.
