Charles Sturt University Switches On One of Australia’s Largest Rooftop Solar Systems
Charles Sturt University in southern NSW now has one of Australia’s largest rooftop solar power systems in Australia.

Todae Solar recently installed a 6,000-panel system at CSU’s Wagga Wagga campus. The 1.77MW system is expected to power the equivalent of roughly 400 typical Australian households. The system is expected to produce around 2,700,000 kWh in it’s first year – which is around 20% of the University’s total electricity consumption in Wagga Wagga.
CSU Green Manager Ed Maher says that this project is not only a significant milestone for the university, but for the renewable energy industry in Australia.
“What we found was that due to the number of parties looking to finance projects like this, the power savings is worth more than the repayments we’re making on the system,” Mr Maher said.
Todae Solar agrees. CEO of Todae Solar, Danin Kahn said, “We are delighted to be the successful tenderer for this project as it builds on our company’s profile as Australia’s leading commercial solar installer.” Todae Solar worked closely with CSU once being selected to design the optimum system across 17 buildings to be able to provide the largest energy generation coupled with the best ROI.
The key driver for CSU’s decision to go solar was to meet sustainability targets, an increasing driver for schools and businesses alike. “It will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,513 tonnes CO2-e compared to conventional grid-sourced electricity, making a significant contribution to reducing the University’s carbon footprint,” says CSU green manager, Edward Maher.
Although this project is a notable achievement for Todae Solar, CSU, and the industry at large, the basic drivers such as sustainability targets and energy reduction in an era of skyrocketing electricity rates are not rare. More and more organisations are switching to solar power for the long-term benefits and strong return on investment.
